Why SLS nylon jigs and fixtures suit Ahmedabad shop floors

SLS collapses that risk: the fixture is a print, so a revised fixture is a revised print.
Selective laser sintering fuses fine PA12 powder layer by layer with a laser, and crucially it uses no support structures — the surrounding un-sintered powder holds the part. That means internal channels, undercuts, captured pockets that cradle an irregular casting, and multi-direction locating features all print in a single body. A machined steel equivalent of the same nest would need multiple set-ups, EDM, or an assembly of bolted plates. As the ASTM/ISO 52900 standard on additive manufacturing terminology formalises, powder-bed fusion of this kind produces near-isotropic parts — strength that does not collapse along a weak layer axis the way an FDM print can.
Where nylon replaces steel — and where it doesn't
Be honest about the boundary. Nylon fixtures win for locating, guiding, holding, checking, and protecting. They are not the answer where the tooling takes a hardened cutting edge, a press-fit under tonnes of force, or sustained temperatures above nylon's service range. For those, we still point clients to machined metal. The table below is the rule of thumb we give Ahmedabad plants during a first consultation.

The material choice: PA12, PA12-GF, PA12-CF and TPU
Not every fixture wants the same nylon. Layer X runs four SLS materials, and matching the grade to the duty is most of the engineering value we add:
- PA12 (Nylon 12) — the workhorse. Functional end-use parts, enclosures, snap fits, and general locating nests where toughness and a smooth surface matter more than maximum stiffness.
- PA12-GF (glass-filled) — higher stiffness and reduced creep. This is our default for fixtures that must hold a datum under sustained clamping load, or that carry pressed-in metal bushes.
- PA12-CF (carbon-filled) — the highest stiffness-to-weight, with a carbon-composite aesthetic. Used where an operator handles the fixture all shift and every gram counts.
- TPU 88A/95A — flexible. Soft-jaw inserts, gaskets, and vibration-damping pads that protect finished surfaces on the line.
Creep is the property most people underestimate. A nylon fixture left clamped under constant load will slowly deform, which is why we push glass-filled PA12-GF for anything that stays loaded between cycles, and design the locating features so the sustained stress sits well inside the material's elastic range. Moisture is the second quiet variable: unfilled nylon absorbs a little water from humid Gujarat air, which nudges dimensions and toughness over time. Glass fill blunts that effect, and for gauges where every micron of stability counts we advise conditioning the part before its first calibration and re-verifying against a master on a set interval — a discipline our ISO 9001 process already builds in.

Designing a nylon jig that lasts on the line
A few design habits separate a fixture that survives a year of three-shift use from one that cracks in a fortnight:
- Design the wear item to be replaceable. Press steel drill bushes and dowels into PA12-GF bosses rather than guiding a drill against bare nylon. When the bush wears, swap it — the print stays.
- Radius every internal corner. SLS handles this for free; sharp internal corners are stress risers that seed fatigue cracks.
- Keep sustained clamping stress low. Spread load over a larger contact area to stay clear of nylon's creep threshold.
- Add TPU soft-jaws where the fixture touches a finished surface so the jig protects the part instead of marking it.
- Number and date the fixture in the model. Emboss the revision into the CAD so the shop floor can never mix a superseded jig with a current one — printed text costs nothing.

Nylon SLS is not automatically the cheapest print for every jig — a simple flat locating plate with no undercuts may be perfectly served by FDM at a lower price point.
